These homeowners wanted to expand and reconfigure the second floor of their home in Silver Spring to gain more space for their growing family. The challenge in this renovation was to increase the size of the house, but also maintain the style and scale of their cape cod style home. A two story addition at the front of the house provided space for a new foyer, closet, and a larger dining room on the first floor. The new formal entry area was important to the clients and helped improve traffic flow to the remainder of the house. On the second floor, the supplemental space was efficiently used for two new bedrooms: a nursery for the clients’ daughter and a much needed guest room. A new bathroom was also added on the second floor, which includes a luxurious whirlpool tub. Although the renovation added a large amount of interior space to the house, it does not appear overwhelming from the street and the style is consistent with others in the neighborhood. The new gable roof and dormer improve the curb appeal of the house and bring light to the second floor.
