Stunning Backyard Oasis

Going into this transformation, we had a disjointed terraced backyard that was not an optimal use of space nor conducive to hosting and entertaining, choppy landscaping made for tedious and complicated pet maintenance, an unfinished and under-utilized shed and deck, and interrupted views from the sky room (aka sunroom). Our clients’ goals for this renovation included better views from the main home for an integrated feel to the yard, more convenient designated areas for pets, space for backyard hosting and entertaining, multiple communal areas, and a functional pool and pool house. The overarching feeling they were striving for was to have a vacation and retreat in their backyard, to savor alone for some R&R or to host and share with friends and family. 

The existing terraced yard would prove to be the biggest challenge when designing a functional entertaining and relaxation space. Rather than fighting the terracing, taking advantage of preexisting division within the area and defining each level with a function was the solution. Natural stone walls create visual texture to the varied grades, while neutral-toned pavers give a polished and upscale look. We also wanted to make this space sing at night, incorporating several different forms of lighting. Lighting plays a critical role in creating atmosphere and safely navigating the various levels of these outdoor spaces, whether it be embedded in the flooring, railings, walls, or water features. 

A multitude of intentional design choices went into the hot tub, pool, poolhouse, lounge, and dining areas within this sprawling backyard to meet our clients’ wants and needs while maximizing convenience and function of every included fixture. What we get in return is an absolutely stunning project that reminds us of why we love what we do.
