Home Gym Dormer Addition
The client had an unfinished and cramped portion of their existing attic that was meant for storage yet, they were using it as a home gym. It was dark, uninviting and they dreaded going to work-out. What they wanted was an open, light-filled space to burn some calories and a spa-like bathroom to relax in afterwards.
By constructing three new dormers in the roof with multiple sets of double-hung windows, the space is flooded with natural light. New support columns and microlam beams retain the structural integrity of the roof. The existing HVAC system was enclosed in a new closet providing easy access. Ductwork was rerouted around the exterior walls and new benches were built over it providing appealing window seats. Light laminated flooring over a felt mat provides some sound insulation for the rooms below.
A large open shower in the bathroom was desired. Existing vents littered the space and would prove a challenge to relocate. The design worked around them. Evidence of this is in the shape of the shower seat and the angled walls surrounding it. The seat again hides the ductwork and the angled walls on either side of the window, hide the vent stacks. With the placement of the bathroom dormer, the shower is its own entity and lends itself to being open. Multiple shower heads provide choices for the bather. Warm and neutral colors are found in the paint and the main floor and wall tiles. This is contrasted by the small dark glass accents tiles in the shower floor and the crisp white fixtures. A bit of privacy is achieved with the half wall at the new water closet.
This project exemplifies a creative solution, utilizing existing spaces to their full potential. It provides the owner with an entirely new space that is inviting and promotes health and fitness.
