Our clients wanted a finished basement that maximized the space to its fullest potential and be a comfortable area for their family and for visiting guests.
The house was a 60s split foyer where most of the living was on the upper level. While the overall layout of the house suited these empty nesters, the hall and master bathrooms were small and dated and the master bedroom did not fit a king size bed nor have enough closet space.
The existing kitchen was jammed into the back of the house and was poorly designed to serve a family of four who liked to entertain. The back staircase to the second floor was narrow, steep and not needed.
The client felt that the existing kitchen was cramped, people get under foot and was lacking in storage and counter space. They desired a more open floor plan with a large entertaining kitchen where the chef could be protected and yet still be integral to the conversations happening.
The client wanted an updated kitchen with better space for entertaining, upgraded appliances and a view to the pool. The existing structure consisted of a variety of additions and a brick wall in the center of the house–opening up walls was the biggest challenge.
The clients living in this DC row house wanted to expand their narrow galley kitchen and update it with clean modern finishes. A rear addition provided space for the larger kitchen they desired and a new den for increased living space.
The objectives of this renovation project were to increase the size of the home’s first floor to include a gourmet kitchen with enough space for two cooks and a secondary entrance through a mud room.
